Welcome Baby Girl!

No. no. we did not have a baby! Friends of ours did. I made the Sugar & Spice album as a gift and needed to create a card. Since I am surrounded by only boys, or rather growing young men, in my house, I don't often get to make girlie things. So I went looking for inspiration. I found this picture of these gorgeous little dresses over at So Sweet Boutique. Aren't they adorable?

And then it hit me... I can make this! So I set out to create a baby girl dress as a card and here is how it turned out. What do you think?

Here is how I made it. I drew a template for the dress and then cut it from pink and white cardstock. I ran a loose stitch through some white tulle to gather it and attached that. I wrapped ribbon around to be the bodice and attached some roses created by gathering pink ribbon. The leaves are simple loops that I made from green ribbon. Then I attached the white cuffs to the sleeves and added the pearl lace to the bottom of the skirt and sleeve cuffs. Voila!

I hope to share the template with you, once I make it look a bit nicer. Right now it's just my sloppy sketching. But first I need to tend to some other things... like getting some of those boys in my life off to basketball practice!

Yesterday - Today

The beginning of a new year is always a good time to look forward as well as to reflect back on where we have been. I've been working on a page that does just that. Putting together a "Book of Me" has been on my list of things to do for quite sometime. I just never seem to be able to set aside any time for working on this. There are so many other priorities in life. A circle of scrapping friends of mine have decided to keep each other focused on this. We are setting monthly challenges to help get pages for our Book of Me completed. If we do each of the monthly challenges, we will have 12 pages for our albums done at the end of this year! One page a month doesn't seem too bad!

This month's challenge was to record what was going on in the world when you were born. This was really fun. I enjoyed doing the research. The world was oh so different. And yet there are some things that have not changed. I tried to capture this in my design.

I used this really awesome template created by Pam Callaghan. You can grab this template yourself over at Ideas For Scrapbookers. As soon as I saw the template I thought that it would be a really pretty way to present a reflection and comparison of the way things were and how they are now. I used the template to build this digital page. You can also use the template as a sketch for traditional scrapbooking.

I tried to make the two sides of the page look like a reflection of each other with minor differences. After all, everything that we are today is because of what we have experienced in our past. I kept the coloring for the "past" side mostly black and white, while the "current" side is full of color. I journaled some historic items typed on the bracket journal spot and made sure to compare them between the two time periods. I also journaled information about what things cost and made that look like a handwritten grocery list.

I hope you've enjoyed this little glimpse into my life. Perhaps it will inspire you to create such a page for yourself. Or even use the template or some of the techniques. If you do, I'd love to see your pages!

Thankful Thursday

Working on getting a bundle of cards ready to go over seas to our troops so they can write letters home. It's part of Operation Write Home. I love making cards. It's not just the crafting part that gives me joy.... it's thinking about the people that will receive the cards and how happy they will be!

Today will be called Thankful for Scraps Thursday! When I work on projects I put the scraps into a drawer for use later. I sort the draw using file folders by color groupings to make it easier to find what I have available. Well my drawer is over flowing! I need to use those scraps!

All of the cards that I made today were made with scraps from my drawer! I also incorporated some packaging materials too. You'll see some hints of cardboard in there. I think I'll do a separate post on that later.

Hope you enjoy seeing some of these cards! I'm off to use more scraps!

Sugar & Spice

I've been racing to beat the clock to get a mini album made for a friend that is expecting her first baby. I am so happy to let you all know that I completed the album last night. Her due date is TODAY! She has not yet (as of this posting) had the baby. Phew! I got it done in the nick of time!

She knows that she is having a girl. So I used lots of pinks & purples. I mixed in a few browns, greens and reds too. I used a 6x6 chipboard album by Prima Marketing for the book. It is a very nice quality heavy chipboard. The pages are scalloped which just added to the girly look.

I painted and "stickled" the cover (gotta love bling!) then dressed it up a bit with flowers and ribbon. I strung some beads and charms on the binder rings too. I have to tell you, having 3 boys of my own and no girls, it sure is fun to get to play with all the frilly embellishments for a change!

The first few pages will allow her to record the baby's arrival along with her thoughts during her pregnancy and some of those really special "first" moments, like the first bath, or the first time the baby sleeps through the night (she'll be so glad for that time!) Then I set aside a page for each month during the babies first year to place photos and record some milestones or journaling.

Well, I've got tomorrow in the baby pool. So I'm hoping this little girl decides to grace us all with her presence on that special day!

Here are a few of the pages. Thanks for stopping by!

Boxes

OK - so that picture is not exactly a "box". I'm going to share 2 different types of boxes with you today. The one pictured above is a sarcophagus that my youngest designed. He is studying Egypt in school. They were sent home with this yellow paper drawn and cut to life size. The assignment was to decorate it as a sarcophagus and had to be very Egyptian, but could have a little bit of their personality show through. My Pittsburgh Steeler's lovin' son managed to sneak in some of his team spirit. Of course there is the famous team spark in the head dress. (I used some Doodlebug Sugar Coating glitter to help give that some sparkle!) And less obvious is the hieroglyphics running down the center of the sarcophagus. They say "Steeler's Rock". Of course I had to snap a few photos before he carted this off to school.

This one I created as a Christmas gift for my mother-in-law. I collected photos and managed to fit in all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren! I made an exploding box using my own extended template which allows 4 additional photo areas compared to the standard exploding box. It was decorated in colors to go with her home decor. I think she was really happy with it. This is a great way to create a mini scrapbook that can hold quite a few photos!

Resolved!

I finally got some time to scrap my resolutions. You may have seen them in my previous post . I thought maybe if I record them on a layout and keep it in my Book of Me, I might actually follow them! Did I hear you laugh? :-)

The photos are all from this past year (2009). I wanted them to look older so I grunged them up in Photoshop. Then I included a few of my favorites on this page... buttons, green, string, my boys and of course some bling!

If you look closely, I included a tag from a tea bag. I was enjoying some tea this afternoon while I worked on this page. I thought it was just the cutest thing ~ "a cup of joy". Let me tell you, that tea was a cup of joy! Stash Tea's Holiday Chai. Yummy!!!

Hope you enjoy this page and perhaps some tea as well!

New Year - Old Habits

Happy New Year! Have you made any resolutions? I'd love to hear about them. Feel free to leave a comment and share some of your resolutions.

I'm still working on some goals. You see, I don't want to set goals that create stress, but rather ones that help me stay on target. I did a great job through the holiday season of keeping my values as the focus during that time. I'd like to do the same throughout the year.

Typically I would have a list of resolutions that I want to improve or do to make my life more "perfect". As a new year begins I would make myself all these promises. But round about March, I would find myself slacking. And my family would pay the price with me as I succumb to way too much stress!! So this in one old habit I'm going to break away from. I accept that I am not perfect (not sure if my family is as accepting, lol). I've come to realize that a certain level of 'benign neglect' is helpful to create a peaceful happy "balanced" life. Some things will just have to be 'OK'. Such as cleaning my house.... instead of cleaning to the point of sterility, it will be clean enough! And I'm OK with that!

With this mindset, I look ahead into 2010 and I resolve to:
  • Be a better mom, wife and friend
  • Make healthier choices
  • Strengthen my faith
  • Send a box of cards to the troops every month
  • Spend less
  • Exercise more
  • Do something creative every chance I can
  • Spend more "fun" time with my family
  • Find time for me
That said...... I did something creative yesterday!! And it was time for me (nailed 2 resolutions in 1 shot!) Yeah. And it felt great! I created this page to add to my BOM (Book Of Me).

So what are your resolutions? I hope you find less stress, greater peace and focus during 2010!
