Make the Day Count

Hi there!  Wow, I can not believe that summer is here and in full swing. This year is really flying by!  18 months ago my husbands neice got engaged. When they set the date for their wedding, I thought it was so far off in the distance. But here it is already. Today.  Congratulations to Nicole and Matt as they start their new life together!!!

The big events in life stand out in our memories as we revisit the milestones in our lives. They certainly are an important part of our lives. But it's all those little moments that truly make our life what it is, that build our character, connect us to friends and family, and give life interest and direction.  Not to be too cliché, I want to encourage you to make the most of everyday!

That is the emotion behind my latest project that I would like to share with you. You know that I love mixed-media art.  Lately I've been working on some mixed-media canvas art.  For this project, I was inspired by Christy Tomlinson. She is an amazing artist with great vision and a very down-to-earth person.

I've got a mix of materials used on this including; just about anything I could grab within reach of my craft desk at the moment, and a few found objects.  What I really love about this project is that it is a reflection of me. On one particular day, at one particular moment. Captured. Remembered.

As an artist, I see my role not only to create, but also to express, and record. To record those little moments and big milestones. To capture memories. To preserve feelings, emotions, thoughts, dreams, ambitions and aspirations.

I'll leave you with a few more close-ups. Then I've got to go...... I've got a wedding to get myself and the family ready to attend!

Cool Patriot

Do you see a trend here in my posts?  Getting close to celebrating Independence Day here in the States.... my creations have taken on a patriotic flare!

Today I get to share some projects that I made with the brand new released today kit Yankee Doodle by WM Squared Designs and Band Geek Designs. You can scroll further down in this post to see all the goodies in the kit!

First up is a layout that I made.  Each year our town holds a day-long family-centered celebration called "First Fourth". Being a small town that was integral during the Revolutionary War, you really feel connected to our countries history around the 4th of July.  These are some of the photos from the fireworks at the end of the day a few years ago.  The template for this layout was created by my friend Pam Callaghan. You can grab this awesome template free at Ideas For Scrapbookers.

The second project that I made was a fan to help keep us cool during all those fun activities!  I created the design in Photoshop using papers from the kit. Printed it out, then accordion pleated it. I tied the center with bakers twine and opened it, adhered the one end to create the fan, attached the other end to a large craft stick.

My son was a good sport and "modeled" using the fan so I could get a photo of it to share with you! He is one cool patriot!!

Now let's get a look at all the stuff in that kit...... It's packed with fun stuff !

But that's not all......

There is a coordinating Word Art... and...

A bonus alpha too!

Enjoy and keep cool!

Shabby Patriot

I had the pleasure of working with 2 new products this week.  A digital kit by Sherwood Studios called Summer Celebration. It is filled with great shabby-chic papers and elements with a bit of a vintage feel. Just take a look:

The other is a set of digital stamps with a modern, whimsical feel.  The set, Americana Digital Stamps, by Stacy Molter, just shout out for happy summer celebrations!  Which got me to thinking, the kit and the stamps would look great together!

So I created this card with them.  I recolored the stamp in Photoshop to coordinate with the papers from the kit. I love that you can do that with digital stamps, makes them so versatile!

I created the pin and the flower myself.  I didn't feel like getting the sewing machine out, so I stitched on the card by hand. I think it helped to add to the shabby-vintage look.

Sketch Inspiration

Today at Ideas For Scrapbookers, the contributors are revealing the layouts that we each made.... all using the same sketch as inspiration.  We do this every other month.  This month Sara got us inspired with her sketch:

Here is the layout that I created:

I took advantage of the small squares to show some of the action from this game with a series of photos. This was one of those games where the pitching was really wild!  I had no idea my son could jump quite so high!

Stop by Ideas For Scrapbookers to see the wonderful layouts by the other contributors. They are all beautiful. I'm sure you will find something to inspire you!

Altered CD Case Mini/Photo Display

I've got another graduation related project to share. And it's one where I've done some recycling. You know I love it when I can re-purpose something... doing my little bit to help our environment!!

I've recycled a CD Case to create a mini album/photo display. I used the soon to be released collaboration kit by the designers at The Digichick called Around the World. Yep - the same one that I used to make the banner in my previous post.  This is a great kit with wonderful colors, textures and designs.  The travel motif's with the vintage feel really lend well to a then-now mini album.

Right now I've included photos of my son from kindergarten and his senior year. On the image above, you can see that I've set teh "adventure" banner to be "pulled" by the airplane using bakers twine.

I've also included a few of my favorite inspirational quotes.  Not only will this make a great display item throughout his graduation celebration, but it will also be a handy little reminder of how far he has come and the promises of the future!

Would you like to know how to make one? I'm sharing a tutorial for this over at The Hybrid Chick today.

Happy creating!

Follow Your Dreams

Have I mentioned that we have a really big graduation coming up in my family?  My oldest son is graduating from high school in a few days. I know he is much more excited about this day than I am. Oh sure, I'm looking forward to celebrating the accomplishments in his life. I'm just not ready for my baby to be so grown up!
I'm getting the house ready for the party!  I wanted to share this banner I created.  I used a new collab kit by the designers at The Digichick called Around the World. This kit will be featured at The DailyDigi for the Month of June 2011 before it comes home to The Digichick in July 2011.

I didn't want the typical "Congratulations" type graduation banner. When I got this kit to work with in advance, I knew it would be perfect for designing a really awesome grungy, vintage banner with a lot more meaning. My son is studying engineering and has hopes of a career in the aeronautical field.  The travel elements in this kit were just right!

I added some Tim Holtz stamps with great encouraging messages of hope and a positive look toward the future.  I used the included cut files as well as fussy cut some elements that I layered on the tags for dimension.
And of course, the banner spells out my message "Follow Your Dreams".
I used ribbon to secure the tags to twine.  Which added to the charm of the banner.

I've got more to do to get ready.  Enjoy your week!

Father's Day Classic and a Freebie!

So I'm getting my mind wrapped around the fact that it is June. I've got a very important graduation coming up this month. A family wedding. Several baseball playoff games. And Father's Day too!

I'm here to share a cute Father's Day card I made.  I thought this was a classic look!  Check out the inside:

I made the card using a brand new kit released by WM Squared Designs called For Dad.

A great kit with fabulous colors and wonderful elements. There is also a matching word art and alpha available too!

And..... I also made a freebie to go with the kit.  You can snag it here (click the image to download) or by visiting WM Squared Designs blog.

Take Note of the Flowers!

Wow, JuneReally??  Spring didn't really happen around here. We had maybe a few days that were Spring like, but we mostly had rain!  But that should make for a good start to the growing season.
And I've got some blossoms to share.  I'm hosting the June Getting Hybrid Challenge over at ScrapMatters. I decided to make it all about flowers.  You can make any type of hybrid paper flower you'd like.  Stop over and give it a try!

I made the flowers and the altered frame above as a sample. You don't have to make a finished project to participate in the challenge, just some flowers.  Here is a closer look at those roses:

Check out this little cutie I made.  I found a nice hardcover notebook in the $1 bin at Target. But it was decorated with some young kid designs. Not my style at all.  But here is what I did with it!
Now that is something I would use!  The "Take Note" is part of a set of digital stamps by Arty Pants called Sentiment Circles.  The papers are from the Life is Good pack by Karen Lewis.

One thing that keeps going from Spring into Summer is baseball. And we've got more games to play. See you soon!
